Sperm & semen · In plain English

Abstinence before a semen test

The time since your last ejaculation before collecting a semen sample. It includes ejaculation through sex or masturbation.

Also searched as: ejaculatory abstinence, semen test preparation

Why you might see this term

Record the interval because it helps the laboratory interpret the sample. ProFertility kit instructions use 2–5 days; another clinic may give a different interval.

What to keep in mind

Longer is not automatically better. Follow your own laboratory instructions and confirm return arrangements before producing a mail-in sample.
