TTC & cycle language · In plain English

Luteal phase

The part of a menstrual cycle after ovulation and before the next period. Progesterone usually rises during this phase.

Why you might see this term

Knowing roughly when ovulation occurred can help a clinician choose the timing of a progesterone test.

What to keep in mind

The luteal phase is not exactly 14 days for everyone. A single short cycle or isolated hormone reading does not diagnose a luteal problem.
