Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)

Reduced or disrupted ovarian function before age 40. It may cause absent or irregular periods and symptoms linked to lower oestrogen.

Also searched as: premature menopause, early menopause, POI

Why you might see this term

Assessment involves your history and appropriate investigations. Early menopause is a related term generally used when menopause occurs before 45.

What to keep in mind

An AMH result alone cannot diagnose POI. Seek advice for persistent cycle changes or menopause-like symptoms, particularly if you are planning children.
