Tubal patency

Whether the fallopian tubes are open so that fluid can pass through them. These tubes are where egg and sperm usually meet in unassisted conception.

Also searched as: tubal latency, open fallopian tubes, blocked tubes, tubal factor

Why you might see this term

HSG and HyCoSy are two ways of investigating patency. A routine hormone blood test does not check whether the tubes are open.

What to keep in mind

An open tube is not a guarantee of normal function or pregnancy. A result suggesting blockage needs interpretation in the clinical setting.
