Antral follicle count (AFC)

The number of small fluid-filled follicles seen in the ovaries during an ultrasound scan. Each follicle may contain an immature egg.

Also searched as: AFC scan

Why you might see this term

AFC can help estimate how the ovaries may respond to stimulation for fertility treatment. It is often considered alongside AMH.

What to keep in mind

This is a count of visible follicles, not an exact count of all remaining eggs or a test of egg quality.
