Pelvic ultrasound

A scan that uses sound waves to look at pelvic structures such as the womb and ovaries. A transvaginal scan uses a slim probe placed in the vagina with consent.

Why you might see this term

It can provide information about follicles, the womb lining and some structural findings. The exact purpose depends on the referral.

What to keep in mind

An ordinary pelvic scan does not establish tubal patency and a normal scan does not rule out every fertility-related condition.
