Conditions · In plain English

PCOS / PMOS

A hormonal and metabolic condition that can affect ovulation, periods and androgen-related symptoms. PCOS is the familiar name; newer NHS information also uses PMOS.

Also searched as: polycystic ovary syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, PMOS, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome

Why you might see this term

Assessment looks at symptoms and a pattern of findings, while checking other possible causes. People can have different symptoms and can still become pregnant.

What to keep in mind

A high AMH level, LH-to-FSH ratio or scan appearance alone does not establish the diagnosis. Irregular ovulation needs an individual plan.
