Free androgen index (FAI)

A calculation using total testosterone and SHBG that can help assess androgen excess in some women. It is not a separate hormone.

Also searched as: FAI

Why you might see this term

A laboratory or clinician may use it alongside symptoms and other findings when investigating androgen-related concerns.

What to keep in mind

FAI is not an appropriate substitute for assessing free testosterone in men, and it does not diagnose PCOS by itself.
