Hormones & markers · In plain English

hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin)

A hormone detected by pregnancy tests. It can be measured in urine or in blood, where a numerical result may be reported.

Also searched as: beta hCG, beta-hCG, pregnancy hormone

Why you might see this term

A clinician may use repeated blood results alongside symptoms and ultrasound when assessing an early pregnancy.

What to keep in mind

A single hCG value does not establish pregnancy location or guarantee normal development. Follow your clinic’s testing plan, particularly after fertility medication.
