Pregnancy test

A urine or blood test that checks for hCG, a hormone associated with pregnancy. Home tests should be read exactly as the instructions describe.

Also searched as: home pregnancy test, urine pregnancy test

Why you might see this term

Most urine tests are most reliable from the first day of a missed period. If you do not know when it is due, NHS advice is to test at least 21 days after the last unprotected sex.

What to keep in mind

An early negative may need repeating. A test does not confirm the location or health of a pregnancy.
